Detox your liver with Milk Thistle

Holiday season means lots of meals and probably lots of drinks, alcoholic and not, or indulging in beverages which we normally would drink during a regular meal. Although it is important not to overindulge and make new year resolutions we know all too well we cannot keep (or even start) we know sometimes things can get a bit out of control. One get together follows another and soon enough we find ourselves in desperate need of a reset.

One of the things I do during and after this season of (sometimes) over indulgence, aside from drinking lots of water, which certainly aids your body in flushing out toxins, is adding a few drops of Milk Thistle in my morning water. In fact, one of the main benefits of this herbal remedy is to give extra help to your liver in doing what it does best: getting rid of toxins.

Milk Thistle can be very helpful as way to detox your liver from alcohol and other polluters.

What is Milk Thistle?

It’s the extract of a prickly plant with a lovely light purple colored flower with distinctive white veins. Its active ingredient derives from the Sylmarin its active compound which also comes handy during the menstrual cycle when the liver is in dire need of some extra help in getting rid of estrogen from the bloodstream.

Due to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties of its compounds it has proved to be effective to treat both liver as well as gallbladder disorders, but also to prevent liver poisoning from alcohol. In fact, it can help reduce inflammation driven by alcohol consumption as well as fatty liver disease (alcohol related or not) which can manifest with symptoms like fatigue and loss of weight among many other symptoms.

Furthermore, because of its anti-inflammatory properties it can fight oxidative stress which causes acne and unpleasant skin flaws. If you are prone to acne you might want to consider adding this supplement to your diet. Try it for at least 2 months and see if you notice any improvement. As always it has to be accompanied by a healthy diet which also contains mostly anti-inflammatory foods.

I personally take it every other month for a week or so, or for a couple of weeks if I feel my body needs a longer detox and I notice it significantly improves the appearance of my skin.

As with all natural remedies, listen to your body and always consult your doctor before taking anything that can adversely affect your health.

Try it and let us know what you think!
