Are you feeling the Spring Slump? Here is what you can do about it

Spring has finally sprung! It’s cherry blossom season and I am particularly excited as this is the time flowers and trees are in full bloom. There is lightness in the air and the warmer weather is welcoming us outdoors.

However, like with other seasonal changes, our bodies have to adapt to longer days and a different rhythm. If you feel tired and a bit less energetic than usual is quite normal: you are probably experiencing what is called “springtime lethargy”. It is due to hormonal changes experienced by our bodies because of the longer days.

On the positive side, this is the time to be more outdoorsy, go out and soak up the sun to replenish your body from the vitamin D you have missed during the winter months. In fact, because of the sunlight your body is going to synthesize more of the happy hormone serotonin and lower the production of melatonin, which is called the sleep hormone. This is the time to go out and stretch your limbs while breathing some fresh air, it will recalibrate your brain and make you feel more energetic.

I am particularly affected by seasonality, light and weather, and, although I love the taste and the smell of coffee, it doesn’t really work for me beyond the first few hours. What does work is rhodiola rosea. It gives me that burst of energy which is very much needed during the seasonal change. It’s also a mood booster, lifting me up when I feel overwhelmed.

I also believe naps are a good way to refresh mid way through the day followed by a peppermint or ginger tea to get reenergized and ready for the rest of the day. I put my headset on do some meditation and take a 20 minutes nap. That’s just enough to rest without falling into a deep sleep.
