Add Oats to your breakfast routine

Among the many breakfast options, oat is definitely top of my list. Although I usually rotate among different meals according to how hungry I am and what my plans are for the day, I started to appreciate this whole grain more as I discovered it has wide range of benefits whether it is consumed as food or applied topically. In fact, there are quite a few lotions that contain what in the scientific community is known as avena sativa: it moisturizes the skin, but it also fights inflammation solving many skin-related issues.

What are the benefits of oats?

First, they are by far one of the most nutrient-dense foods containing a mix of carbs (25 grams per cooked cup) and fiber (4 grams), including a very special type of fiber known as beta-glucans which are particularly effective in fighting inflammation, osteoporosis, but can also boost the immune system and help prevent obesity by making the gut producing a hormone which sends a satiety message to the brain. Indeed it is an excellent way to start the day as it has a very low-glycemic index and makes you feel satiated for long. Oats also contain a good amount of protein (6.6 grams) and essential amino acids which can give you energy especially if you are going to have a long day or plan to exercise shortly after.

Oats are a very versatile breakfast option with many benefits the overall health.

They are also loaded with many important nutrients and minerals providing more than 60% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of manganese which helps with inflammation and controls blood sugar levels causing less insulin spikes. For this reason it is highly recommended for those who want to keep their weight in check and keep their gut healthy by feeding it with good bacteria. They are also very effective in reducing bad cholesterol, known as LDL, and preventing it from oxidizing which causes long term heart problems. Lastly, oats have a good amount of phosphorus, magnesium and zinc, but also iron and B vitamins.

They are a very skin-friendly food as they contain a high amount of antioxidants, like polyphenols and a unique one called avenanthramides, which increases the production of nitric oxide leading to widened vessels and better blood flow. These powerful antioxidants are also known for their anti-itching properties hence oats have been used in many body lotions for their calming and beneficial effects on people affected by eczema, rosacea, but also psoriasis and melasma (skin patches). The lotions are widely available with the main ingredient listed as Colloidal Avena, which simply means finely ground oats.

Now that you know all the benefits of this delicious grain you might want to consider adding it to your diet as it’s very versatile and can be cooked with just water or a mix of water and milk (my preferred way) and goes well with a variety of toppings from nuts to fruits. Add just a bit for coconut sugar for extra sweetness with low glucose.

For the cleanest on-the-go oat creamer you can opt for addjoi, it’s simple and easy to add to your coffee, tea and just about anything.
