The benefits of keeping hydrated

Only a few weeks to go until summer is finally here! Hydration is critical to our body functions, but it is particularly important as the heat rises. The recommended daily intake of water for women is around 2,7 liters, but you should drink even more if you exercise or if it’s very hot. Water has so many benefits as we have seen earlier: it flushes out toxins, moisturizes the skin reducing fine lines and wrinkles. But there is more to that!

Water helps the skin regain lost elasticity and promotes gut health

Here are other very important benefits of drinking plenty of water:

  1. Prevents itching due to cracks and flakes resulting from lack of hydration.

  2. If you lose weight too fast, your skin starts to sag as it loses its natural elasticity, drinking water can help regain the lost elasticity.

  3. If your skin is very sensitive, or you are naturally prone to acne and blemishes, by drinking more water your skin can get healthier by rebalancing its natural pH.

  4. As the temperature increases during the summer, or if you exercise, your internal temperature also rises: drinking water lowers the body temperature preventing rashes.

  5. Lastly, drinking more water is essential for regular bowel movements and to flush out toxins through urine, keeping the skin clean by promoting gut health and stimulating digestion.

A few things I usually add to my water to make it tastier and reap even more benefits are: mint, which also helps with digestion; lemon, lime or orange which have vitamin C; basil, with its anti-inflammatory properties; ginger, which helps with both digestion as well as inflammation; apple cider vinegar, which prevents breakouts and acne; and cinnamon, which stabilizes blood sugar levels. You can also add pineapple for flavor and vitamin C.

Adding electrolytes to replenish essential minerals lost during perspiration, but also aids gut health and digestion which in turn will make your skin more plump and healthy.
