Fight inflammation with Black Seeds
A few days ago I was planning to cook some golden beets and the recipe called for one of my favorite seeds: nigella seeds. Kalonji, also known as black seeds, nigella sativa or black cumin, are an extremely versatile seed which comes with a wide array of benefits. You can add it to both savory as well as sweet meals. I like to sprinkle it on my yogurt in the morning, but I also like to add it to salads and many other meals.
Its oil and seeds have long been used in Ayurvedic medicine as well as in Islamic medicine as it can be found predominantly in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions of Southern Europe. It is particularly good to fight bacterial infections and a remedy for skin issues, but they have many other benefits:
To start, it's a very potent antioxidant thanks to its many active components. As such it can decrease the effects of stress damage to the body and skin.
It has also shown to be very effective in lowering cholesterol (LDL or bad cholesterol).
Test studies have proved kalonji to be effective in combating bacteria-caused infections. When applied topically, the oil has shown to be very effective in killing off some strains of a skin bacteria which is normally resistant to antibiotics.
It is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is a normal response of the body to infections or injuries, but when it becomes chronic it can lead to serious illness and cancer.
It is particularly effective in protecting the liver from toxic chemicals, hence providing a good detoxifying solution.
It is also good in stabilizing blood sugar levels and it helps feeling satiated for longer.
It is quite easy to incorporate in your diet and generally safe to use. However, as usual you need to listen to your body and consult your doctor in case you notice any change. Here is an easy recipe you can try with beets and anther one for your morning yogurt bowl!
